China Unicom Revenue Up 7.6% In H1 2010

Chinese telecommunication operator China Unicom has published its semi-annual financial report for the first half of 2010, stating that its operating revenue reached CNY82.11 billion, a year-on-year increase of 7.6%.

Of the total operating revenue, CNY41.05 billion was contributed by the mobile businesses, a year-on-year increase of 17.7%; while CNY40.11 billion was from the fixed line businesses, a year-on-year decrease of 2.4%.

China Unicom said that because the 3G business was in its starting period, its revenue could not equal costs for 3G network operation and maintenance, asset depreciation, and marketing. In addition, its fixed line businesses further declined during the first half of 2010. Due to these factors, the company's EBITDA in the first six months was CNY30.33 billion, decreasing by 5.1% year-on-year; its profit was CNY2.53 billion, decreasing by 61.8% year-on-year; and its basic profit per share was CNY0.11, decreasing by 61.6% year-on-year.

For China Unicom's mobile businesses, it revenue from 3G communication services was CNY3.97 billion. At the same time, its GSM business developed with revenue of CNY35.12 billion, a year-on-year increase of 2.7%.

In addition, its comprehensive average revenue per user increased by 2.9% to CNY42.9. Of that amount, ARPU for 3G users was CNY134 and ARPU for GSM users was CNY39.8.

For user growth, China Unicom's 3G users increased by 4.818 million during the reporting period and its GSM users increased by 4.557 million. The total number of the company's users reached 7.56 million.

For broadband business, the company gained revenue of CNY14.47 billion, a year-on-year increase of 23.4%.
