MediaTek Forms 4G LTE Technology Alliance With Japanese Operator

2010-08-09 by ChinaWirelessNews.com Editor | Print | Email Email

Taiwan-headquartered fabless semiconductor company MediaTek has announced that it has signed a licensing agreement with the Japanese communication giant NTT DoCoMo, regarding LTE-PF, a mobile terminal platform based on Long Term Evolution.

Upon the completion of the LTE-PF licensing agreement, MediaTek plans to integrate this LTE technology with its 2G and 3G technologies to provide solutions for Japan and global markets. This agreement is reportedly the first phase for MediaTek's strategic cooperation with DoCoMo. MediaTek hopes to establish a long-term partnership with the Japanese company and will continue cooperation and exchanges in marketing, technology, and interoperability testing.

According to Ming-Kai Tsai, chairman and CEO of MediaTek, the company has earned a market-leading reputation in the 2G era and will continue to innovate from 2G into 3G, and 3G into LTE. This licensing agreement will not only enable MediaTek to offer a globally interoperable LTE mobile platform, but also allows it to provide its customers and partners with cutting-edge wireless communication solutions and a smooth transition from 3G to 4G and beyond.

Toshio Miki, managing director of the communication device development department of DoCoMo, told local media that the agreement marks the start of a strategic cooperation between DoCoMo and MediaTek to help popularize LTE, which will enable MediaTek's LTE products to spread throughout the global mobile market and enable DoCoMo to introduce LTE-compatible consumer services for enriched user experiences.
