China Mobile, CBC Jointly Announce Commercial Use Of Mobile TV Service

2010-03-24 by ChinaWirelessNews.com Editor | Print | Email Email

China Mobile and China Broadcasting Corporation have jointly announced that the TD+CMMB mobile TV service developed by the two parties has officially been put into commercial use.

Zhang Haitao, vice director of the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television, told local media that with the commercial use of China Mobile's mobile TV service, mobile phone users will be able to watch TV, in addition to making phone calls, listening to the radio, and accessing the Internet. The integration of China's self-developed TD-SCDMA technology and CMMB technology will open a new area for the development of the country's independent intellectual property rights.

Wang Jianzhou, president of China Mobile, said that the mobile TV service uses CBC's content and networks as well as China Mobile's user resources and customer management, playing to the full advantages of both parties. The two companies will jointly cultivate new consumer growth points in the Chinese market and create more programs that are suitable for mobile phones to serve the Chinese consumers.

So far, 303 cities in 27 provinces have reportedly opened the mobile TV service and six channels, including CCTV-1, CCTV-News, CCTV-5, a movie channel, and two local channels, are available on this new platform, with the temporal promotional fees of CNY6 per month.

Mobile phones made by 14 manufacturers now support this new service and the number of products that can use this service will reportedly reach 67 by the end of this year.
