Chinese telecom operator China Telecom is reportedly talking with the Canada-based Research In Motion to introduce the latest BlackBerry handsets into the Chinese market.
According to news in Chinese media, handsets are said to be undergoing tests and the schedule for the launch of those mobile phones in China has yet to be decided. According to an unnamed insider, RIM aims to bring its BlackBerry handsets and services to Chinese customers in government departments and corporations. China Telecom has advantages in the government and corporate markets, which is suitable for BlackBerry's promotion. In addition, BlackBerry adopts the CDMA technology in its North America base camp and China Telecom operates the CDMA network in China, which is the basis of the two parties' cooperation.
Prior to this, RIM cooperated with China Mobile in launching BlackBerry devices and handset email services in China in 2008 and those BlackBerry devices were supplied by TCL Communication Equipment. However, because BlackBerry focused on the high-end market and the lowest monthly cost of the BlackBerry services provided by China Mobile was CNY398, BlackBerry's market promotion in China was not smooth.
With the beginning of the 3G age in China, all the three major telecom operators are busy in occupying the market. China Unicom has been negotiating with Apple to introduce the 3G iPhone into China while China Mobile keeps a close relationship with the Google-friendly Android handsets. Compared with its two competitors, China Telecom's selection of BlackBerry is also a good choice.
