To control the sending of Chinese spam wireless short messages, the three major telecom operators in China, China Mobile, China Unicom, and China Telecom, will limit the number of short messages sent by users to 1,000 daily, with the exception of periods around holidays and festivals.

According to Zhu Zhengwu, vice general manager for China Telecom's individual client business department, to fight spam mobile phone short messages and at the request of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, Chinese telecommunication operators will limit the daily number of short messages sent by users, and those users going beyond the limit will have their messages blocked. Zhu said the specific standards are that on non-holiday and festival days, the number of short messages sent by one user should be limited to 200 per hour and 1,000 daily; on holiday and festival days, the number of short messages sent by one user should be limited to 500 per hour and 2,000 daily.

Zhu added that local telecom branches around China can set their own standards in accordance to their actual situations, but the standards should not be looser than the national ones.

In addition, the three telecom operators have signed a framework agreement to set up a cross-network platform to fight the spam short messages and the platform is expected to be launched officially in mid-June this year.
