2008-12-02 by ChinaWirelessNews.com Editor | Print | Email Email

Having acquired China Unicom's (CHU) CDMA networks for CNY110 billion, China Telecom (CHA) has now formally taken control of the CDMA network in Macau, which is currently the only 3G network managed by the Chinese operator, and the name of China Unicom Macau brand has been changed to China Telecom Macau.

An insider from China Telecom told local media that according to the plans of China Telecom, Chen Wu, former managing director of China Unicom Macau, will be general manager of China Telecom Macau, and China Unicom Macau's 40,000 local users will be switched to China Telecom Macau. The original services of the company, including mobile phone numbers, roaming services, will not be affected by the handover.

In 2006, China Unicom gained the only CDMA network license in Macau in an open tender and the network was completed and put into operation in 2007. Apart from exploring the local user resources, the 3G network also provides roaming services for Chinese mainland CDMA users while they visit Macau.

According to the acquisition agreement singed by China Telecom and China Unicom, China Unicom Macau and its 3G network in Macau are included in the range of the acquisition.

China Telecom says since the company's name officially changed from China Unicom Macau to China Telecom Macau, it will now begin upgrading the service of the 3G network and will soon offer more favorable packages and fees to users.
